Figuring out topsoil needs is where most DIY gardeners get stuck. Order too little and your project stalls mid-way. Order too much and you are stuck with mountains of dirt nobody wants. Here is how to get it right every time.
Three numbers matter: how long, how wide, and how deep. Multiply them together and you get volume in cubic meters. Multiply that volume by 1,600 (the density of topsoil in kg per cubic meter) and you get the total weight.

Projects requiring more than 1 tonne of material often cost less when delivered in bulk rather than purchased in bags. Get at least three quotes from local yards and factor delivery into the total cost.
