Figuring out topsoil needs is where most DIY gardeners get stuck. Order too little and your project stalls mid-way. Order too much and you are stuck with mountains of dirt nobody wants. Here is how to get it right every time.

The Basic Math

Three numbers matter: how long, how wide, and how deep. Multiply them together and you get volume in cubic meters. Multiply that volume by 1,600 (the density of topsoil in kg per cubic meter) and you get the total weight.

Worked Example

Imagine a raised bed 2.5 meters long, 1.2 meters wide, and 20 centimeters deep:

• Convert depth to meters: 20 cm equals 0.2 m
• Calculate volume: 2.5 × 1.2 × 0.2 = 0.6 cubic meters
• Compute weight: 0.6 × 1,600 = 960 kg of topsoil
• Divide by bag size (40 kg): 24 bags needed
