Getting Started With Garden Projects

Keep Your First Project Manageable

Resist the temptation to transform your entire yard in one weekend. A modest 3 square meter plot teaches you more than a sprawling attempt that overwhelms you. Master one area, then grow from there.

Test Before You Invest

Before spending money on truckloads of amendment, understand what you already have. A simple soil test kit reveals pH, nutrient levels, and texture issues. Heavy clay demands different treatment than sandy loam.

Use Tools, Not Guesswork

Run your dimensions through our material calculator before making calls to suppliers. Guessed estimates consistently overshoot reality by 30 percent or more, leaving expensive piles of unused material.

Build in Layers

Raised beds benefit from structured filling. Bottom layer of cardboard or newspaper smothers weeds below. Middle section mixes topsoil with compost in roughly two-to-one ratio. Surface gets a protective mulch layer.

Planning for Bigger Projects

Calculate Mix Ratios Precisely

Quality raised-bed soil contains 60 percent topsoil, 30 percent compost, and 10 percent perlite or coarse sand for drainage. Our calculator helps compute each component separately so you order correctly from different suppliers.

Account for Compaction

Freshly delivered materials settle substantially during the first four to six weeks. Count on 15 to 20 percent volume reduction for soil mixes. Plan a top-up visit after initial settling.

Time Purchases Strategically

Mulch demand peaks in spring and autumn. Buy soil when you are ready to plant rather than stockpiling, since organic materials lose nutrients during storage.

Picking the Right Products

Mulch Decision Framework

  • Wood chips: Ideal around trees and permanent landscape plants. Lifespan 24 to 36 months.
  • Bark mulch: Premium appearance for front yards and showcase beds.
  • Straw: Economical choice for vegetable rows and strawberry patches.
  • Rubber: Playground surfaces and pet zones only. Never in food gardens.
  • Pine needles: Perfect under blueberries, azaleas, and other acid-preferring species.

Soil Selection Quick Guide

  • Topsoil: Baseline filler for beds, lawns, and low-spot correction
  • Garden soil: Pre-enriched blend ready for planting, costs slightly more
  • Potting mix: Container use exclusively, too expensive for large areas
  • Compost: Never used alone, always mixed into existing soil

Typical Project Requirements

These ballparks help gauge your needs. Use our calculator for exact figures:

Standard Raised Bed (1m × 2m × 0.3m)

  • Topsoil base layer: approximately 720 kg
  • Compost enrichment: approximately 80 kg
  • Surface mulch: approximately 40 kg wood chips

Medium Garden Plot (8 square meters)

  • Soil preparation at 20 cm depth: about 2,560 kg topsoil
  • Compost blended in at 5 cm: about 300 kg
  • Mulch topping at 7 cm: about 224 kg wood chips

Garden Pathway (8m × 0.8m × 0.1m)

  • Base layer of crushed stone: about 1,024 kg
  • Decorative finish layer: about 320 kg pea gravel
